Who remembers this now long lost, Hanover Street building?…
The building was originally named ‘Brooks House’, 31 Hanover Street and was the former home of Joseph Brooks, a Liverpool merchant & ropemaker.
The house was believed to be one of Liverpool’s oldest buildings at this time. Thought to probably date from as early as the 1730s, when Liverpool was still relatively small. Sadly this old building was demolished sometime around 2007, to make way for the L1 development we have today, despite there being a campaign to save it from demolition.
I remember what was probably the last time Brooks House was occupied. The building was taken over for an art installation, where the downstairs space was made to look like a cake shop. Realistic looking cakes, were displayed in the window aswell as inside, as if ready be sold.
The location of Brooks House, Hanover Street. The Top view, shows it’s location in 2005 prior to demolition, with the same view in 2023, following demolition and completion of the L1 development. (Curtesy of Google Earth).
