A network of Top Secret subterranean Tunnels, passages and chambers, beneath Wirral’s New Brighton Palace amusement arcade, have quite an interesting historic story to tell…
The New Brighton Palace Tunnels, said to date back over 200 years and thought to have been originally built and used by wreckers and smugglers.
During WWII, the subterranean network was taken over by the Ministry of Defence, becoming a Top Secret underground munitions factory. Said to be staffed by 200 women working 24 hours a day. The tunnels also had Fire wardens based on site, while also being used as an air raid shelter.
The women employed to manufacture the weapons, even started their own social club in the tunnels. This paved the way to modern times, where the Underground site later became a nightclub called the “Creep Inn”.
The original machinery used during WWII to manufacture munitions, is unbelievably still in place and apparently still in working order.
An interesting place indeed…
