Around 30 years ago, I did an epic European journey of discovery. Setting off by car from Liverpool, travelling through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery along the way…
The journey of almost 4,000 miles in around 16 days, saw us crossing the English Channel to Calais. Then on through France, Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria and Italy as far south as the beautiful cathedral city of Florence. From Florence, we returned towards home via Pisa, Monaco and Paris. What an amazing adventure it was…
These images, taken during this Journey of discovery, with a ‘Nikon FA’ camera, using 35mm colour slide film sometime between 1992 and 1995.

A short video, shot with the kind permission of St Anne’s school, Edge Hill for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway Trust. The aim of which was to record and document the ‘Pillar of Hercules’, a remnant of the original Liverpool to Manchester Railway’s infrastructure. The pillar of Hercules was originally one of two large 110ft chimneys that once stood at the end of the Wapping Cutting, above the tunnel Portals.
The main chimney, which has long since been demolished, leaves just this square base visible. You can still see where the chimney would have stood and how the inside of the structure has now been taken over by nature. The high drone viewpoint, also gives an interesting view looking down into the historic Wapping Cutting beyond the original 1830 wall in the school yard.

Along side the Littlewoods building, Edge Lane, Liverpool, there is a long lost WW2 Air Raid Shelter.
Inside is this long forgotten wartime structure are these wonderful artworks. Drawings of the people, seeking safety from the chaos and bombs of war outside…

Photographs taken within the Dingle Overhead Railway Tunnel and station area. The Dingle OHRT was part of Liverpool’s now long demolished Over Head Railway or Dockers Umbrella. The photographs show different periods, before the collapse that occurred, Just after the collapse had happened and finally after the collapse was repaired.

The famous Wapping Cutting, Wapping Tunnel & 1829 Crown Street Tunnel, Edge Hill, Liverpool. Take during seperate permission visits to the Wapping Cutting, the 1829 Crown Street Tunnel and to both ends of the Wapping Tunnel.

Inside the old Red Star Tunnel which was located between the then Platforms 7 and 8 which is where the New Platforms 7 and 8 are now.
The Tunnel went from the building at end of the platforms, under Liverpool Lime Street and through to the former Copperas Hill Post Office which has now been Demolished. I was told that this Tunnel has now been filled in too
.

A rare opportunity for a permission visit into the Liverpool Lime Street to Edge Hill Railway Cutting, during the Lime Street blockade.
Various features features can be seen, including the old track workers Cabin, Ramsbottom’s Chimney and the bricked up Triple Decker Tunnel (one of Joseph Williamson’s Tunnels).

This lovely old Cinema on Lime Street, which was finally demolished, following a fight with Heritage Organisations in 2016. The Cinema was opened in 1912 as the “Lime Street Picture House”. Being the most advanced Cinema in Liverpool at that time. There was seating for 1,029 person’s as well as a full orchestra to accompany the silent films of those early years.
The cinema was renamed the “Futurist” in October 1920 and finally closed its doors in 1982. There followed over 3 decades of neglect, where the building structure suffered greatly. Finally, following a failed legal battle to save the Futurist, or at the very least it’s lovely Georgian styled Facade, the building was finally demolished in August 2016. These images are an important reminder of the once lovely building, that stood on this site.
I was privileged to be given official access in order to Photographed inside the Former Cinema in October 2015. This visit to photograph inside was arranged specially to record the inside of this lovely building just before its planned demolition. These are most probably the last official images taken inside the Futurist before it was lost forever…
